Goodness me, it's been a while hasn't it!
HI, HELLO, HOWDY, IYAAAAA!
How the heck are ya? I hope you had a gorgeous Christmas and of course, Happy New Year to you all! It really feels like Christmas was a million years ago already, don't you think? We had the most amazing couple of weeks together as a family and as Goldie, who is almost three, really understood the whole thing, it was more magical than ever before. Trying to explain where the tree has gone, why she can't have advent calendar chocolate each morning and why she no longer sees Santa and sparkles (fairy lights) everywhere, however, is less magical...
We spent Christmas here there and everywhere, seeing family in Manchester and in Yorkshire, and whilst it was exhausting with two tiny humans in tow, I'd do it all again to witness the magic once more.
Anyway, it's a new year, and we all know how much I love a fresh start. I've always enjoyed a new year, particularly for setting new goals and manifesting things for the year ahead. I still enjoy my seasonal goals that I've always set out for you guys to read, but there's something even more fab about a new year goal setting spree. You might have seen the whole "ins and outs" for 2024 trend circulating online and in true Megan style, I absolutely LOVED seeing these and being inspired for my own ins and outs for the year ahead.
I shared these over on my TikTok but thought I'd go into a little more detail here for you guys, so here goes.
1. Trying and failing to do it all.
I imagine this is something that a lot of people will feel, but particularly working mums and dads, maybe? Since our gorgeous baby boy Gene August came into the world, I've really felt the juggling act ramp up a notch or seven. Between working for myself and caring for my two beautiful babies, it is, of course, a juggle. I do love the chaos of it all but I really want to feel like I'm doing both my work, and motherhood, to the best of my ability. I want to really outline my working days and our family days and to stick to them. I work best in routine and I know both my little ones enjoy routine so finding solid, full days of work and then of play will do us the world of good. This is the routine we had in place when it was just Goldie and it worked so well. Since lil man stepped into our lives, the routine has been rocked and I'm now frantically trying to work at any moment I get... Usually for a couple of hours in a morning or an evening and it's not really ideal.
Comparison is the thief of joy after all, and I for one hate the feeling of comparing ones self to others. I think it's something we all go through from time to time and it's completely normal and human to do so. However, it's something I really want to leave behind in 2023, to focus on myself and myself only.
3. Getting overwhelmed easily
Feeling overwhelmed was a biggie for 2023. Again, it was going from one to two children and it being a little trickier than we imagined it to be. I enjoy the chaos of family life and things have most definitely levelled out in the last few months but I can still find myself becoming overwhelmed in the mess, organisation and general day-to-day logistics of family life. George and I are a really incredible team and I could not do any of what I do without him and his support, and it's something we are working on together. Goodbye overwhelm, you will not be missed.
4. Impulse buying
To be perfectly honest, this has been something I've been working on for a few years now but from time to time, I do find myself falling into the trap of pushing the "buy it now" button quicker than I should . Each purchase I make from now on will be considered for a number of weeks before I hit go, and I'll always try and find it second hand first.
5. Skipping meals/Only eating kids leftovers
So far so good on this, George and I have signed back up to the wonderful Hello Fresh so we have fresh ingredients and recipes on hand which means we make the time to cook and eat well together. We were finding that we'd be so tired at the end of the day, that we wouldn't eat dinner or things were so busy in the morning that we'd completely skip breakfast altogether and I for one can do that no longer, this gal needs her food.
6. No Sleep
COME ON GENE YOU CAN DO IT!
He isn't a great sleeper, especially during the day time, his naps are quite frankly pathetic, but recently he has been doing 10pm-7am which we really can't complain about. Now to tackle getting our evenings back and then trying to prolong his naps and we will be tickety boo on the sleep front... Easy right? HA!
1.Finding what fills my cup
Aside from my family and work that is. I love hanging out and raising my little family and I adore my work, but I would love to have something else in my life that I REAAAAALLY enjoy doing and thrive off. Something that takes me away for an hour a week or something like that. Whether that be an exercise class, a hobby or even a beauty treatment/holistic ritual, something that is completely for me and where I can switch off from everything and ideally, not talk to anyone haha.
Following on from number one, I've really noticed myself ageing before my very eyes, and whilst it's probably just lack of sleep and not eating properly that has triggered it, I feel if I can indulge in regular facials that would be a good start to looking and feeling better, before I turn to botox... Maybe.
3. Film Photography
I used to absolutely love shooting on film but since my beloved camera died a death and I didn't replace it right away, I've really fallen off the wagon and it's something I'm keen to get into again. I've got the camera, I've got the film, I just need a new battery and we're off. I'm excited to play around with this medium again and to share the process here on my blog.
Well, so far so good, I'm back baby!
This was a brief discussion George and I had recently and it's something that is more likely going to be "in" for the next couple of years. We want to make wise investments for ours and our childrens future but what that may be is still up in the air, watch this space.
6. Eating/Drinking more greens
I LOVE eating vegetables, fruit, less so. But as I said, my diet has been really lacking lately but it's something I want to fix for 2024. With both my pregnancies, I really got into juicing and would make myself a fresh juice or smoothie every day that was packed with fruit and veggies which I knew were great for me and my babe. Why I can't just do it for myself is beyond me but I'm working on it this year that's for sure.
7. Routine that suits the whole family
And we're pretty much back where this blogpost started. ROUTINE! Routine is my word of the year, routine is something I crave and my children, especially Goldie (since she's always had such a solid routine) crave, and it's something we are currently lacking. Goldie's routine hasn't changed much at all, she still wakes, eats and sleeps at very similar times. She goes to her wonderful nursery on the same days each week, so for the most part she's tiptop. Myself, George and Gene however are walking to a very different beat which we need to fix. Set work days for the two of us will start and also nailing Gene's sleeping will make such a difference to a more scheduled day... In theory.
So that's my ins and outs for 2024, I hope you enjoyed reading this post.
MAAAAAN it feels so good to be writing again, I'm excited to be back to my blog once more and to continue writing and nurturing this space that started it all. I am brimming with topics, edits and ideas for this place but if there's anything you'd like me to touch upon, please do let me know as I am ready and raring to go.
Lots of love and thank you for all your support always, it means the absolute world.
This is my 11th year writing on this blog (wild) so let's give it the love it deserves.
